Hirudotherapy

Hirudotherapy

Hirudotherapy is a method of treating various diseases with the help of medicinal leeches. The healing effect of such therapy is undoubtedly present.

However, most of us either overestimate the effect of leeches or deny their benefits altogether. Therefore, some myths about hirudotherapy should be debunked.

Any disease can be cured with the help of leeches. Such reasoning is wrong. The fact is that there are many diseases or conditions of the body in which hirudotherapy alone will not be enough. We are talking about heart attacks, strokes or acute inflammatory processes. Leeches will not help with a number of diseases of internal organs, as well as in the case of a shortage of some trace elements in the blood. Also, experts do not recommend putting leeches in the case of some painful conditions. We are talking about allergies, fevers, acute infectious diseases, toxicosis, hemophilia and septic conditions. In such situations, an acute inflammatory process must be removed with drugs, and then, in the stage of remission, a course of hirudotherapy should be carried out.

If you often put leeches, then you can even die from blood loss. It is rather difficult to talk about the maximum number of leeches. It is known that before the revolution, the installation was practiced in one session in general up to fifty such blood-sucking creatures. Naturally, this was not the first session, and the leeches were simply not allowed to drink their fill of blood. In modern methods of hirudotherapeutic treatment of endocrine diseases, it is supposed to install up to 40 leeches in one session. And only one or two such sessions are planned per month. Already after 4-5 months, a positive shift in the patient's condition will be visible.

And with diseases such as prostate adenoma, mastopathy, diabetes, gangrene or obesity, installation of as many as hundreds of leeches is allowed in one session. As soon as they suck, they are immediately removed. Before such sessions, as well as after their end, patients are advised to drink plenty of fluids - up to seven liters per day. Some medical centers can boast that in this way they restore the health of patients with a whole bunch of diseases.

In general, there are two diametrically opposite points of view in hirudotherapy. Some experts believe that it is enough to put no more than 5-7 leeches per session, while others believe to use up to 70 blood-sucking creatures. Of course, this approach is allowed only in specialized hirudotherapy clinics. At home, especially in the first sessions, it is really allowed to install no more than five leeches.

There is also a well-known method of treating several mental illnesses at once, including epilepsy. In this case, the patient's head is shaved and 30 to 70 leeches are placed on it. Then they are removed 1-2 minutes after suction. Medical leech to release concentrated nutrients into the patient's blood, thus restoring the desired balance of trace elements in the human body.

Leeches cannot be placed on bioenergy centers. In Tibetan medicine, it is customary to place leeches on such areas for more than a hundred years. Not so long ago, a similar practice began to be applied in our country. At the same time, many claim authorship of such an idea. Western doctors sometimes simply rediscover what has long been known in the East. And ideas that are literally in the air can occur to several specialists at the same time.

In hirudotherapy clinics, for preventive purposes, they begin to put leeches on five important centers - the perineum, pubis, navel, solar plexus and the point between the eyebrows. Doctors say that in areas where the blood is darker and more, the inflammatory process is more pronounced. For those patients who have high blood pressure, leeches are placed, going down from the upper centers to the lower ones, and in patients with low blood pressure, on the contrary, rising.

Medical leeches cannot be re-installed. This issue is also highly controversial in modern hirudotherapy. The opinion that leeches should be used only once came to us from Tibet. Supposedly, this creature takes away his negative energy from a person, so this should be done only once. So a person who is not privy to the secrets of treatment using this method should not reuse these natural doctors. First of all, it is worth understanding that it is simply impossible to put the same leeches to different people. And caring for such assistants requires certain knowledge.

Some specialists give their patients leeches to re-install, explaining how to properly handle such a "tool". At the same time, it is known that medicinal leeches are again able to be beneficial only after 3-4 months. There is an opinion that it is impossible to destroy those creatures that have helped a person. In the case of the third and subsequent installation of leeches, they should be placed without complete hemorrhage.

Leeches can be "milked". In the literature, you can indeed find advice on how to milk the leech after the second session. To do this, pour water in a saucer, add half a teaspoon of salt, and then lower the leech there. The creature will begin to spit out blood, after which it must be lowered with its head down and with light touches to push the body, directing the movements from top to bottom. It is believed that such a “milking” procedure helps leeches to develop their useful secrets faster - in just 1.5-2 months. However, this has not been scientifically confirmed in any way. However, this method of "milking" is still widely used, since it does not interfere with the leech in any way and continue to benefit people.

Medicinal leeches can be planted on any part of the body. Biologists say that the leech is able to find the right reflex points by itself, biting through the skin only in places suitable for acupuncture. However, experienced hirudotherapists with more than 10 years of experience are skeptical about this opinion. Doctors believe that the leech can stick to any place. However, some requirements are still necessary - this part of the body must be warm and devoid of hair.

At home, it is generally not recommended to let the leech choose the place of its bite itself. Usually, the radius of its suction is determined by a glass bottle, with which the creature is planted on the body. There are places where it is strictly forbidden to plant leeches at home. These are the eyes, the vagina and the male genital organ, the tongue and gums, large blood vessels, arteries and veins.

Medical leeches can infect a person with infections, including AIDS. Professional hirudotherapists argue that this has never happened and cannot be in principle. However, this does not eliminate many questions from patients. Not everyone trusts leeches for fear of infection. You can understand people - there is direct contact with blood. People, in proof of such a myth, even demonstrate boils that appear on the second or third day after the treatment session. At the same time, it is surprising that these formations do not appear at all in the place of installation of leeches and not even near it. Do leeches really infect people?

This is out of the question, although boils do appear. The educational literature explains this by the fact that the leech secret reveals the foci of latent infection. In such cases, experts recommend placing the leech directly on the boil itself, only if it did not appear due to scratching the wound.

Once upon a time, scientists conducted experiments and proved that leeches have bacteria inside. She not only kills infections that enter the little doctor's body along with the blood, but also heals her big patient.

Leeches help with cancer. There is a theory according to which the most common disease at the moment is trichomoniasis. Its prolonged course leads to the fact that microbes are collected in plaques, and then in capsules. They collect in a specific part of the body that is most vulnerable to infection. Such an accumulation of capsules in the human body further provokes oncological diseases. But the leech gives such useful substances that, penetrating into the tissue, cleanse the body.

As a result, the capsules dissolve and the risk of cancer is reduced. It is no coincidence that in some clinics, leeches are used to treat cancer. In other places, it is believed that this terrible diagnosis, on the contrary, is a contraindication. Therefore, it is categorically impossible to put leeches. But both those and other specialists agree on one thing - at home, leeches should not be treated with benign or malignant tumors.

At home, it is not at all important where exactly to start treatment. Since it is difficult to harm leeches, there is often a rather simple opinion. People believe that wherever they put leeches, they will certainly help. There is no point in any rigid schemes and recommendations, they are conditional. And you can treat or start prevention from any area you like.

However, most modern hirudotherapists still recommend at home to first put leeches on the liver projection. There are two reasons for this. First of all, it immediately becomes clear how the leech behaves and how much blood flows from the wound, and it is much easier to care for it. It should also be noted that biliary dyskinesia is a very common disease. Even 85% of seemingly healthy people have such a deviation. However, the fact of the matter is that this is only at first glance.

If you look closely into the eyes of these people, you can see that the squirrels there are slightly grayish or yellowish in color. Stagnant phenomena in the liver lead to cardiovascular diseases, varicose veins, urological and gynecological diseases. That is why one can be confident that liver prophylaxis is necessary. It can also be done at home. This will help the body prevent a number of complications that are possible due to biliary dyskinesia.

Leeches are slippery and disgusting creatures, it is simply unpleasant to heal with their help. Of course, outwardly, a leech is not as beautiful as a butterfly. There is really no need to talk about aesthetic pleasure. But do not think that before the bite this creature will crawl over the body, pondering where it is better to suck. Doctors put leeches on certain points, not giving them the opportunity to move at all. Usually, after the job is done, living "doctors" are sent for disposal. Therefore, it is worth focusing on the treatment and on getting a positive result, rather than looking impatiently at unpleasant creatures.

Treatment with leeches is quite painful. In fact, the process of hirudotherapy is accompanied by pain comparable to a mosquito bite. For most people, this is quite tolerable. The fact is that in the saliva of leeches, among other things, there are also analgesic substances. Due to this, the sucked leeches can stay on the animal's body for as long as desired, without causing discomfort to the wearer. A painless bite makes it possible to avoid resistance and to fully satisfy. The only inconvenience worth talking about is the wounds that can bleed for several hours.

Hirudotherapy is an expensive procedure. In fact, it is worth checking the prices for procedures to understand that it is not at all as expensive as it seems. It also matters what kind of ailment will be treated. Usually, the doctor can prescribe several sessions, each of which is accompanied by the installation of 2-3 to dozen leeches. This will determine the cost of the entire course. One leech in various institutions costs from 40 to 500 rubles, it is worth remembering that some clinics provide an opportunity to purchase such blood-sucking creatures for treatment at home. Of course, hirudotherapy is not a panacea. However, with it, rehabilitation after injuries and illnesses proceeds much better, and the preventive effect cannot be denied.

You can heal with any leech. In fact, only one species of this creature is used to treat people - the medical leech (Hirudina medicinalis). Pharmaceutical leech (Hirudina officinalis) can also be used for medicinal purposes, but this practice has not been widely used. But even among the representatives of the "right" species, finding a suitable specimen will not be so easy. The leech should be smooth, with the most flat body shape and a sharp head. It is desirable that it be greenish in color and always with orange stripes and black dots on the back. But shaggy leeches, as well as individuals with a cylindrical body shape and a rounded head, are not suitable for use in hirudotherapy.

The leeches stick tightly and suck out all the blood. In fact, the leech satisfies its appetite pretty quickly. She needs only 45-60 minutes for this. In this case, the creature sucks an average of 5 to 15 mg of blood. This indicator depends on various factors - the season, age, odors from the patient or in the office, the strength and health of the leech itself. After saturation, it usually falls off by itself. If this does not happen, then a doctor will always come to the rescue.

It is enough for a specialist to bring a tampon moistened with alcohol to the front suction cup of the leech. This will make it fall off quickly. After removing the leeches, wounds remain on the body, which continue to bleed for another 3-24 hours. But during this time, the blood will flow out about the same as the leech sucked it out in total. So there is no risk of blood loss during hirudotherapy. On average, each leech results in a blood loss of 10-30 mg. During the session, they usually put from 5 to 7 leeches. As a result, the patient will lose no more than 50-210 mg of blood.

If the hematopoietic organs work normally, then such losses do not pose a threat to the body. It should also be borne in mind that leeches suck mostly stagnant blood, which is already saturated with harmful decay products. Removing such fluid only helps the body to establish normal blood supply to the affected tissues and organs. As a result, hirudotherapy remains the only method of hemorrhage today that works at the capillary level.
