Considering the chaos that is happening on our roads, including on the part of traffic police, it is not surprising that DVRs are so popular. In general, many do not take this class of devices seriously, there are stereotypes and myths about their work.

It is not clear whether it is possible to use the video recorder recording in court, which resolution is better to choose? In addition, there are several hundred different models on sale, each of which emphasizes its strengths. So it's time to deal with the main myths about DVRs.

To shoot at night, the DVRs are equipped with infrared illumination. In fact, the functionality of such a backlight is somewhat different - it is needed to improve lighting at a distance of several meters in the direction of shooting. This is most often required when it is necessary to distinguish the faces of people who are in the immediate vicinity. So, if at night the car is stopped by a traffic police inspector, then you can unfold the recorder and turn on such a backlight. As a result, noise will go away from the picture, and the image will be quite acceptable. The backlight will be useful if you have to shoot outside the car at night. And for night shooting on the move, it would be better to choose a recorder with a glass lens system. Such optics perform much better in low light conditions, compared to conventional devices with plastic lenses. And infrared illumination today is quite common in DVRs.

The wider the angle of view, the wider the picture captured when shooting. And although this moment is not the most needed today, for many it is still important. And the manufacturers began to indicate the viewing angle not horizontally, but diagonally. This is actually a marketing gimmick that can mislead the customer. An honest parameter of 120 degrees can be obtained only when the aspect ratio of the picture is 16 to 9. If they correlate as 4 to 3, then the camera will show unnecessary pieces of the sky together with roadsides and lanes. You should select devices that give a "wide" resolution of 1280 * 720 or 1920 * 1080 when shooting. If the DVR promises 1024 * 768 pixels or even 640 * 480, then it is better to refuse such devices altogether. The latest models from well-known brands guarantee exactly a real wide viewing angle.

Excellent recording quality is possible with Full HD resolution. Those who have worked with DVRs are familiar with the concept of interpolation. It is used by "gray" devices of unknown manufacturers or fakes for famous models. To save on components, the creators put cameras with low resolution. And then, using interpolation, the picture is simply stretched to the desired resolution. So, from a VGA 640 * 480 picture, you can get HD or even a solid Full HD with 1920 * 1080 pixels. The user will be surprised why his camera, with the declared high performance, shows muddy videos. So before buying a DVR, especially a little-known company, you should look for videos from it, posted on YouTube. Then it will immediately become clear what the device really can do and how much it corresponds to what is stated on paper. It is quite obvious that self-respecting brands do not resort to interpolation.

The data from the GPS receiver of the DVR can be used as evidence in court. They can confirm your speed or lane. Do not believe so much in magical orbiting satellites that can help. In fact, our user electronics with a built-in GPS-receiver still gives a considerable error in the exact determination of coordinates. As a result, the location accuracy is determined with an error of up to 7 meters. To this should be added the interference in the city, where the buildings are quite dense. So it turns out that it is rather difficult to consider the data from the GPS-receiver of the DVR reliable in terms of specifying the coordinates of the car at a certain point in time. In addition, it is worth remembering that if the recording of the video and the subsequent use of this recording do not provide for the mandatory certification of the device, then using it as a measuring device (determining the speed and location) will require the presence of such a status. But the presence of GPS in the DVR will prove useful in another connection. This module is usually combined with a radar detector. As a result, the driver receives warnings about the inconsistency of the speed of his car with the established norms. In some registrars, it is possible to transfer the GPS coordinates of the route to map services in order to remember the route traveled.

Leaving the DVR in the car can deter thieves. In fact, this not only does not scare away, but even attracts intruders. After all, if you plan to rob a car, first of all, the one in which the DVR is installed will be selected. The stolen device will no longer be able to tell anyone about anything, but a thief can come in handy. Even a miniature DVR, if there is a mount in the cabin, will be found quickly. The thief will understand that such a device is located somewhere in the cabin.

Leaving the accelerometer (G-sensor) turned on will quickly fill your memory with unnecessary files. This can actually happen if the recorder has default settings enabled. The accelerometer is needed to trigger when overloaded. This directly indicates accidents. In this case, the current record is placed in a specially allocated memory area, where it remains, excluding from cyclic rewriting. Thus, the video will be saved. But the default settings of the DVR can become such that the accelerometer will be triggered by every bump. To exclude unnecessary triggering of the sensor, you need to adjust it by lowering the sensitivity threshold. Such settings are usually found in recorders with a G-sensor.

If you put a video recorder in the car, it will record everything that happens on the road. There is one important feature that unscrupulous manufacturers are silent about. The fact is that the registrar writes videos with a certain length - from 1-2 minutes to 10-20 minutes. Well-known producers try not only not to lose a single second between videos, but to overlap them - a new video must also include a few seconds of the previous one. But practice shows that there are models that, when creating a new file, can lose from 1-2 to 10 seconds! This suggests that the recorder can "fall out" of the process at the time of an accident without capturing anything. But this happens only with the cheapest models - another reason not to save on such a device.

The court is obliged to take into account any video from the recorder. Another version of this myth says that the decision to attach the record from the registrar to the case is made by the judge individually based on personal considerations. In fact, the same "Code of Administrative Violations", which operates on the territory of Russia, clearly states that any information obtained by any methods can be used as evidence in the proceedings of traffic disputes. Of course, this includes any analogue, digital recordings of video or sound that may somehow shed light on the circumstances of the case. Of course, a traffic police officer examining a disputable situation, or a judge may well have questions about the authenticity of the record. Then there is the technical expertise that can prove the truth of such material. The recording itself may not mean anything, it should be evaluated along with other materials. It happens that witnesses get confused, lie or make mistakes, which is excluded in the case of video. That is why you should trust such materials more than people or employees of the road patrol service. If the court refuses to attach the video to the case, then it is imperative to demand written confirmation of this with the obligatory indication of the reasons for such a decision. Sometimes even a single request for motivation for refusal forces the court to reconsider its point of view, without even ordering an expert examination. And in order to make the court believe in the truth of the recording, it is necessary to transfer the carrier to the traffic police officer right at the scene. And this must be done in the presence of witnesses. The fact of the transfer of the carrier must be reflected in the protocol, indicating in detail its technical characteristics. For a memory card, this will be the manufacturer, volume, class.

Not digital, but only analog recordings with a frequency of 25 frames per second are accepted for consideration in court. This is a rather old myth that appeared at the very beginning of the era of the spread of DVRs. In those days, experts had proven techniques for working only with analog recordings. In modern realities, digital recordings have long been accepted by the courts in the manner described above. And the most modern DVRs shoot in Full HD resolution at 30 frames per second.

If there is a video recorder, then traffic police officers are no longer needed to register an accident. This statement is only half true. In fact, motorists can solve the problem themselves and without an accident inspector, and without a video recorder. For this, the participants in the accident must fill out the "Accident Notice" form and leave. This is allowed if no more than two cars were involved in the accident, there are no injured people, and the amount of damage does not exceed 25 thousand rubles. At the same time, the participants themselves do not argue about who is to blame. This method belongs to the “European Protocol and has been in effect in Russia since 2009. But according to statistics, the police are still called in 29 out of 30 cases. The authorities plan to experimentally introduce an extended version of the Europrotocol. These conditions were supplemented by a clause on limiting damage to the amount of 400 thousand rubles. Mandatory video recording from the recorder is also required. In this case, the model must be equipped with accelerometer and GPS modules. This is how insurers protect their money from fraudsters as much as possible. That is why purchasing the most advanced recorder with many functions and sensors can be a good investment for the future.
